Okinawa: Lunar rainbow photographed

A rare phenomenon “lunar rainbow” - aka moonbow - was observed in the Kunitachi observatory in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa prefecture, and they successfully photographed the faintly growing rainbow in the night sky.

Lunar rainbow is only observed when there’s moisture in the air on a nearly full moon night in dark locations. The lights reflected in the water molecules are very faint, so it had been difficult to capture in a photograph in the past.

It was raining on and off during the night the lunar rainbow was observed, and only for 30 minutes while the moon was seen. This was the first time to be observed in Japan. The researcher who took the photograph, Mr. Hidekazu Kayama, commented, “This is my first time to see it, and it was mystical with a hazy faint light.”
