Experimental visualization of radiation level

A major Japanese electrics maker, Toshiba, has developed a special camera which visualizes the level of radiation in the area with colors (much like a thermographic camera) - red indicating high and blue indicating low radiation, and they have started testing in the Onami area of Fukushima city on January 11.

They compared the radiation levels of the area’s before and after the decontamination process; they confirmed that the screen colored with red for high radiation turned to blue after the process. Only disadvantage for the camera is that it takes about 10 minutes to visualize the few meters of square area in locations where it is normally a few miliSV/yr. Toshiba is testing to research for its best practical uses.

Mr. Kanai of the company’s product development division for the Fukushima recovery, who developed the special camera said, “The experiment went well that we were able to visually confirm that the decontamination process was thorough. We hope to reduce the fear associated with radiation by making it visible.” Mayor Seto of Fukushima city who watched the experiment said, “It’s a good idea to make radiation visible, which will make the residents less worried. If the camera to be mass produced and distributed soon, it would take a major part in decontamination.”
