France: Rally to demand shutdown the oldest nuke plant

In a wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, there was a rally to demand the shutdown of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant on January 15. About 300 demonstrators gathered from France and the neighboring nations and demanded an immediate shutdown with placards that said, “Never let the Fukushima / Chernobyl repeat again” and “Worried about the aging reactors.”

The Fessenheim nuclear power plant, the oldest nuclear plant in France, has been in operation for more than 34 years, and is located in East France near the border of Germany and only about 25 miles from Switzerland. French Nuclear Regulatory Authority has been demanding the power company to reinforce the structure of the aging nuclear reactors for the last few years.

While current French President Sarcozy is taking a cautious position re. the Fessenheim plant, the opponent, Hollande, is for shutting them down immediately.

In Japan, a new law is suggested that all nuclear reactor to have a retiring age.
