Japan: 50 out of 54 reactors halted

The No5 nuclear reactor at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa power plant (operated by TEPCO) in Niigata prefecture will be halted for a routine maintenance on January 25. There will be only one other reactor (the same plant’s No6 reactor) generating power on TEPCO grid after this Wednesday.

Currently, 15 out of 17 reactors of TEPCO are halted; 5 are still under restoration since the Niigata earthquake 5 years ago; all reactors in Fukushima is halted due to the Fukushima Daiichi accident; others are undergoing routine maintenance.

TEPCO has increased the power generation from the thermal plants as well as asking firms and households on their grid to voluntarily reduce the power usage within reasons to cope with the situation. The power company has submitted the results of the mandate stress test of the No1 & No7 reactors of the Kashiwazaki Kariha plant to the government, however, there is no outlook on resuming their operation since Niigata prefecture believes there isn’t sufficient verification of the Fukushima Daiichi accident by the national government.

With the pending halt of the Kashiwazaki Kariwa’s No5 reactor, 50 out of all 54 reactors in Japan will be halted.
