A report from Yokohama
The city of Yokohama started lending the dosimeters to the residents since last month (January). Each ward has two devices, and a household can borrow one for 24 hours by appointment (until April 27).
When I found this out, I sent out an email FYI to my parents and brother. Honestly, it’s not a huge worry where they are, but it wouldn’t hurt. In fact, when I was there back in December for a couple of weeks, daily life was carried out as usual. Well, except for one thing: we carefully selected our food at the market, and took a safer cooking methods (like boiling vegetables instead of microwaving, and so forth).
Recently, my mother emailed me that my brother bought a dosimeter. (I knew I could count on him to get one. He likes gadgets.) So she borrowed it and measured one of the planters in which she grows vegetables in the patio. Her email said, “One of the planters measured 0.05 micro-Sieverts/hr. It takes more than 5 minutes to measure one location because it’s low radiation level, and it’s been too cold for me to measure all of them. Looks like we’re alright.”
「プランターは0、05マイクロシーベルトでした 線量が少ないと測定に5分かかるので 寒くて全部測定出来ません まあ 大丈夫でしょう」
Anyway, it’s a relief for me to hear the dosimeter showed the low number. This measurement was done in the Tsuzuki area of Yokohama city, FYI.
